Story of “Sciroppo Esistenziale”:
In the month of March, I worked at the Bisonte printshop here in Florence, where I created a print on a metal plate using the etching technique (15th century). The image you see here is a bit gray because it is a “ghost print”: in practice, I reused a plate that I had just used for a previous print. The original drawing represents a face drawn in an abstract way.
A month later, in April, I went to the Lottozero workshop in Prato to complete the creation. I used the screen-printing technique (20th century), mixing red and black ink unevenly, thus adding new details.
The print on the left is inspired by a collage I made using my great-grandfather’s personal collection of stamps and a digitized photo of my cousin.
The print on the right is a bitmap image derived from a creation I made using a block of pewter.
I titled this work “Existential Syrup” because I feel close to existentialism, especially that of Sartre. From a visual perspective, this print represents an existential emotion that I sometimes experience.
I express my existential feeling through faces, which I transform to make them more mysterious, complex, and confused. Existentialism, in fact, deeply reflects on human freedom, in particular the freedom of choice. In the creative process, I free myself from intrusive thoughts, giving life to these almost metamorphic faces, which become the visual symbol of my inner dialogue.
