About Jacopo Koning
Jacopo Koning is a multidisciplinary artist and designer of Italian and Dutch heritage, born in Brussels. His creative path began with an art foundation year in Canterbury at the University for the Creative Arts and evolved through a degree in Fashion Design at Ravensbourne University London, culminating, through a scolarship, in a Master’s Degree in Graphic Design at IED in Florence.
Koning’s practice is informed by Babaism — the art movement he founded that celebrates modern nonsense as a form of cultural resistance. Babaism embraces the absurd as a way to navigate an overstimulated world, transforming confusion and contradiction into playful visual expression. Through this lens, Koning frequently explores the concept of the face, assigning personality and humor to objects and ideas while questioning what is considered “normal” in contemporary culture.
Koning’s visual language blends physical and digital processes with spontaneity and wit. He employs Adobe-based workflows alongside expressive hand drawings, scanned textures, and even typefaces crafted on paper. His aim is to transform the mundane into the enigmatic, reframing ordinary visual stimuli into something curious and alive.
He has presented his work in solo and collective exhibitions in cities such as Rome, Florence, and Brussels, and has been featured in cultural events such as Brussels Design September Festival, expanding the reach of his experimental approach across different disciplines and audiences.
His artistic philosophy can be summarized through his own words:
“I find it essential to create expressive and ludicrous pieces now more than ever. We live in a world that can be perceived as absurd because of, inter alia, the overflow of information and voices through social media, the rise of political extremism, and raging wars. Everything can be something in my eyes; even the least interesting photo can become something fun. Everything can be reworked; nothing is meant to be, yet everything makes sense at the same time. I enjoy working with the concept of anti-normalization.”
Through graphical, illustrative, and multimedia works, Jacopo Koning challenges expectations and invites viewers to embrace the delightfully irrational.
